West Hollywood, CA – After more than 75 years of celebrities and tourists hanging out along Sunset Strip, this landmark roadway will undergo its first historical repaving. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Wednesday, January 20th at the world famous Whisky A Go Go, an anchor party spot on the Strip where rock n’ roll stars have launched their careers since 1964 including Jim Morrison and The Doors.
Harris & Associates’ involvement with the Sunset Beautification project began with the project’s inception in 2007, where Harris assembled an expert team to collaborate with the City and its community partners. The Harris Design Team included:
- Albert Grover & Associates – Traffic Engineering
- Kobata Associates – Landscape Architecture
- Labelle-Marvin – Pavement Engineering
- KDM Meridian – Surveying
- Harris & Associates – Civil Design and Project Team Manager
It is estimated that the project will be completed in 6 months and will entail specifics such as:
- Innovative / cost effective PCC pavement rehabilitation methods
- Over 70 custom curb ramps and pedestrian “bulb-out” enhancements
- Sidewalk, tree well and street tree improvements throughout
- Raised landscape median installations and enhancements
- Drainage and drivability improvements
- Twelve traffic signal modifications
- Striping and signing improvements
- Pedestrian and bicycle safety enhancements
The team has developed detailed construction phasing and sequencing work requirements to minimize public impacts. A key focus is to retain the original, colorful, “World Famous,” appeal and eclectic nature of the Sunset Strip.
“The success of this project to date is a demonstration of how cooperative partnering between public and private resources can result in lasting beauty while enhancing a public treasure for the benefit of the community,” said Randall Berry, P.E., project team leader for Harris.
